Luanda, Angola, 5 Jan – Angolan state oil company Sonangol, Maersk Oil & Gas Angola and their partners Wednesday in Luanda announced the discovery of oil in the Azul-1 test well, located in the deep waters of block 23 in the Kwanza basin.
According to a statement from Sonangol, the well – the first in the deep waters of the pre-salt layer – was drilled to a total depth of 5,334 metres.
The statement added that an initial analysis had indicated a potential capacity of over 3,000 barrels of oil per day.
Based on these encouraging results, Maersk Oil Angola will evaluate the discovery and move ahead with exploration work on the well.
Block 23, whose concession-holder is Sonangol, has Maersk Oil & Gas Angola as its operator with a stake of 50 percent, and its other partners are Svenska with 30 percent and Sonangol P&P with 20 percent. (macauhub)
