Mozambican government seeks investor for marble quarry in Montepuez

31 January 2012

Beira, Mozambique, 31 Jan – The deadline for handing in proposals for the public tender to run the marble quarry and processing factory of Mármores de Montepuez, in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, is due to end Wednesday, Mozambican daily newspaper Diário de Moçambique reported.

Launched by the Mining Resources Ministry, the tender is to select the best proposal for development of the marble quarry located in Montepuez district, including developing facilities associated to the integrated marble project launched in 1990 with the financial and technical support of the Italian government.

The marble processing factory in Pemba, better known as Marmonte, was inaugurated in July 1993, as part of the Montepuez integrated marble project, initially in the hands of Italian company TecnoStone (, and later handed over to Portuguese group Visabeira.

For reasons unknown to the provincial director for Mining Resources and Energy of Cabo Delgado, Ramiro Nguiraze, the Visabeira group closed both its marble quarrying and processing business and, as a result, its exploration license was cancelled by the Mining Resources Ministry. (macauhub)
