Tropical Fruit Training Centre in Namialo, Mozambique, to be refurbished

8 February 2012

Maputo, Mozambique, 8 Feb – a public tender was launched Tuesday in Mozambique to carry out refurbishment work at the Namialo Tropical Fruit Training Centre, an institutions that promotes technology in the fruit sector, according to a report in Mozambican newspaper Notícias.

This work, according to the newspaper, is funded by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA).

The experience of the “Chiquita” brand, which places bananas produced by Matanuska (a company based in Monapo district) on the European Union and Asian markets, will be the basis for training trainers and commercial producers of fruit on a national scale.

The Centre, which is based at the facilities of the Agronomic research Institute of Namialo, will eventually expand its activities to other types of tropical fruits as well as opening centres for demonstration of results across the country.

The choice of Nampula to host this centre is based on the fact that the province has a high agricultural potential and has benefited from recent investments, particularly for banana production. (macauhub)
