Japan to pay for construction of new fish market in Maputo, Mozambique

1 March 2012

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) plans to donate US$11.6 million to Mozambique for construction of a new fish market in the city of Maputo, under the terms of a memorandum signed Wednesday in Maputo.

According to Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias, the future fish market will replace the current market on Avenida Marginal, and will be 50 by 200 metres in size and have refrigeration equipment to keep the fish fresh, as well as administrative facilities and a car park.

The representative of JICA in Mozambique, Ryuichi Nasu, said that the funding would be provided without need of repayment and was given in response to a request by the Mozambican government in August 2008. (macauhub)
