Chinese company gives assurances that it can refurbish rail link between Lobito and Luena, in Angola by July

Officials from the China Railway 20 Bureau Group Corporation (CR-20) have said in Lobito, Angola that trains on the Benguela Railroad (CFB) would start running to the city of Luena, in Moxico province, in July 2012.

The announcement was made Saturday during a visit by the Angolan Minister for Transport, Augusto da Silva Tomás to Lobito. According to the Chinese contractor so far over 948 kilometres of the railroad have been refurbished of a total of 1,343 kilometres.

In order to refurbish the railway line 817 kilometres of track were laid, 22 bridges built and 64 stations.

Refurbishment of the railroad is expected to cost US$1 billion most of which is from a line of credit from China. (macauhub)
