Mozambique’s Agriculture Ministry starts reclaiming abandoned plots of land

19 March 2012

Mozambique’s Agriculture Ministry has started revoking land titles (DUAT) in cases in which the beneficiary has abandoned the plots of land, the national director for Land and Forests, Dinis Lissave said in Maputo Friday.

At the end of a meeting with the Consultation Commission of the Agriculture Ministry, Lissave noted that 201 DUAT titles had been cancelled so far, covering an area of over 64,000 hectares.

Last year, the Ministry for Agriculture launched an inspection campaign covering 1,362 plots of land for which DUAT titles had been issued, covering 455,000 hectares.

The inspection detected that 42 percent of the title-holders were not making use of the land, most of which due to an inability to secure the funds needed to carry out the projects put forward to the Agriculture Ministry. (macauhub)
