Construction of Maputo ring road will create 2,500 jobs

2 May 2012

Construction of the Maputo ring road by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), will create 2,500 local jobs for a period of 30 months, a spokesman told Macauhub in Maputo.

Narciso Faduco, director of the communications department of the Maputo council, told Macauhub that just over 200 Chinese technical staff, including engineers and foremen would also be involved in the project.

The director for infrastructure of Maputo municipality, Vidigal Rodrigues, told Macauhub that the future Maputo ring road would have tolls, although so far it had not been decided how many there will be or where they will be located.

Construction of the ring road is expected to cost US$315 million, and US$300 million will be funded by a credit line from the China Export Import Bank and the remaining US$15 million will be paid for by the State Budget.

The municipalities of Maputo and Matola are facing a problem of traffic congestion and the new ring road is seen as a solution to this problem.

There are just two tolls in Maputo province, both on National Road 4 which links the Mozambican capital to South Africa. (macauhub)
