Angolan state oil company Sociedade Nacional de Combustíveis de Angola (Sonangol) is preparing to drill for oil in a black located in the territorial waters of Guinea Bissau, Angolan weekly newspaper Expansão reported.
The newspaper based its report on a map of oil production in the Gulf of Guinea published in April by Quest Offshore Resources, a US consulting company for the oil and gas sector.
According to the Quest Offshore Resources map, Sonangol is in block 7A and has so far not moved on to the prospecting phase.
The map of oil exploration in the Gulf of Guinea shows that three of the nine existing oil blocks are in the exploration phase, and that Swedish oil company Svenska is the biggest investor in the region, operating blocks 2 and 6A.
Guinea Bissau and Senegal have a joint exploration area, one block of which has estimated reserves of 1.1 billion barrels, according to reports published some time ago citing the secretary-general of the Agency for Management and Cooperation between Guinea Bissau and Senegal, Guinea’s Mamadu Baldé.
