Mabubas dam in Angola inaugurated once again Monday

16 May 2012

The Mabubas hydroelectric plant, located on the outskirts of the city of Caxito in Bengo province, with its capacity increased from 17 megawatts to 26.8 megawatts was inaugurated Monday by the Angolan Minister of State and for Economic Coordination, Manuel Vicente.

The dam, which was refurbished and expanded by construction company GHCB – Angola, a subsidiary of Chinese group Guangxi Hydroelectric Construction Bureau (GHCB), has a 60 kilovolt (Kv) transmission line connected to Luanda province.

The work cost US$21.7 million and took two years.

The dam will generate enough electricity to cover the needs of the city of Caxito and the Dembos municipal area, in Bengo province.

The Mabubas hydroelectric dam has been operating on an experimental basis since February of this year. It was destroyed twice during the Angolan civil war, the first time in the 1980s and the second time in 1992. (macauhub)
