Access channel to port of Maputo has updated chart

29 May 2012

Safety in the access channel of the port of Maputo has improved as a result of updating the navigation chart by the National Institute of Hydrography and Navigation, a source from the institute said in Maputo.

The chart, which was updated in January of this year, has already been presented to navigation agents and the companies that operate regularly at the port of Maputo, said the source cited by daily newspaper Notícias.

Since then, the source said, no more safety problems have been reported by the ships using the port of Maputo, specifically ships running aground in the access channel.

According to the source modernisation of the navigational chart was a necessity not only because of incidents in the channel but mainly because recently the port of Maputo has seen a heavy traffic increase as a result of growth in regional and international trade.

As part of efforts to respond to this level of demand the port authorities have dredged the access channel to give it a depth of 12 metres as compared to 9 previously, which allows ships with a capacity of up to 60,000 tons to enter the port. (macauhub)
