30 May 2012

The number of passengers at Praia airport has risen 97 percent since 2005, the year in which it was converted from an aerodrome into an international airport, the chairman of Cape Verde’s airport management company Aeroportos e Segurança Aérea (ASA) said cited by Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress.

Mário Paixão said that in 2011 528,800 passengers used the airport taking both domestic and international flights.

In 2005 statistics show that 268,700 passengers used Praia aerodrome.

Until 2005 Praia only had Francisco Mendes Aerodrome at its disposal, which only allowed small aircraft to land there.

In October 2005 a new airport was opened alongside the existing aerodrome, which made it possible to carry out scheduled international flights. Studies are currently being carried out to extend the airport runway to receive large aircraft, which are required to land at Sal airport at the moment. (macauhub)
