China buys over 1 billion euros in Portuguese treasury bonds

The Portuguese secretary of state for the Treasury and Finance, Maria Luís Albuquerque, said in Beijing that the People’s Republic of China around a year and a half ago had bought Portuguese treasury bonds worth over 1 billion euros.

Albuquerque who was speaking to Lusa in Beijing, where she met with Portuguese debt investors in order to, “better inform them of recent developments in Portugal.”

“China has always been a significant investor (in Portuguese debt),” she said.

As well as a meeting with officials from the State Administration Foreign Exchange (SFAE), the government body that manages foreign reserves, the secretary of State, who is due to return to Lisbon Wednesday, made “courtesy visits” to the China Three Gorges and State Grid companies, which this year took stakes in Portuguese power company EDP and in power grid company REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais), respectively.
