South African company Illovo has increased sugar production at the Maragra factory, in Mozambique, by 30 percent, from 69,656 tons to 90,694 tons between 2011 and 2012, said the company, which is Africa’s largest sugar producer, Wednesday.
In 2009-2010 sugar production at Maragra totalled 80,917 tons.
According to the Durban, south Africa-based company, the results were due to favourable weather and increased sugar cane production, which rose from 94.7 tons per hectares in 2010-2011, to 99.1 tons per hectare in 2011-2012.
The Maragra factory is located in Maputo province, and has a market share of 32 percent.
Mozambique has three sugar factories in Marromeu and Mafambisse in Sofala province and Xinavane in Maputo. (macauhub)
