Mozambican sugar company Açucareira de Moçambique (AM), which is Italian-, US-, and British-owned, is due to launch a project to produce and process sugar cane in the coastal Mozambican province of Gaza, according to Mozambican news agency AIM.

The agency said that the facility, which will require investment of US$180 million, had been signed off last week and would be carried out over an area of 12,000 hectares, of which just 10,000 hectares are currently available.

Mozambican newspaper Notícias reported that a sugar cane nursery, covering an area of just over 50 hectares was being prepared on the banks of the Limpopo River.

The project will include construction of a factory to process the sugar cane into sugar, and the administrator of the Guijá district, Zacarias Soto, told the news agency that it would need around 4,000 workers for the fields and the sugar processing factory. (macauhub)
