Canada’s SNC-Lavalin modernises hydroelectric facility in Angola

13 July 2012

Work to repair and modernise the Matala hydroelectric facility in Angola’s Huíla province will drive the social and economic development of southern Angola, said the Angolan ambassador to Canada, Agostinho Tavares during a visit to the work site.

The work was awarded to Canadian civil engineering group SNC-Lavalin, as part of a project expected to cost US$225.8 million. Once the work has been finished the dam will be able to produce 38 megawatts of power, which will serve not only Huíla province, but also the province of Namibe and Cunene.

The work began in August 2010 and is due to end in November 2014.

Cited by Angolan news agency Angop, ambassador Agostinho Tavares said that the project would generate electricity for the development of “large” manufacturing projects and would also allow for the growth of the agricultural sector, given the size of the Matala municipal area. (macauhub)
