Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui group interested in oil exploration in Angola

26 July 2012

Japanese group Sumitomo Mitsui is interested in onshore oil exploration in Angola, weekly newspaper Expansão said, citing sources from the Angolan Oil Ministry.

According to the source, interest was shown by officials from the Japanese group at a meeting with the National Directorate for Oil and Biofuels, which is a branch of the Oil Ministry.

The Japanese group’s interest comes at a time when new bids are expected for oil blocks announced by the Oil Minister, José Maria Botelho de Vasconcelos, at the beginning of the year.

Interest from the Japanese in the Angolan oil sector and that of other countries is due to a programme underway in the country to close nuclear reactors in the country and replace them with other, less controversial, energy sources. (macauhub)
