German group Mercedes-Benz plans to export bus chassis manufactured in Brazil to China, where bodywork built by associated companies will be attached, the president of the group’s bus segment said Tuesday in Hannover cited by the Brazilian press.
During the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) automotive fair, which opened to the press Tuesday, Harmut Schick said that the decision to export chassis produced in Brazil was made after the group was contacted by a number of Chinese bus chassis manufacturers.
Noting that the Brazilian factory was the group’s largest bus manufacturing unit, Schick added that during the fair meetings would be held with Chinese chassis manufacturers for potential partnerships.
Schick, who has personal experience of the Brazilian market having worked at the Juiz de Fora factory in the state of Minas Gerais, gave assurances that the Brazilian-made chassis were competitive and that between 5,000 and 6,000, units were exported each year from total production of 30,000 units.
