South African company starts raising chickens in Mozambique

10 October 2012

South African chicken farming company Astral Foods last week opened its first chicken unit in Mozambique, some time after launching a similar business in Zambia, the group’s chairman, Chris Schutte said.

The hatchery unit imports eggs from National Chicks, a group unit in South Africa, but the chairman said that Mozpintos had three aviaries that would be remodelled in order to start producing the eggs needed for the hatchery to be self-sufficient.

The Mozpintos Broiler Hatchery is located neat the Goba dam, in Maputo province, and has an initial capacity to produce 158,000 day-old chickens per week.

Astral Foods has been in Mozambique since 2000 when it started producing broiler chicken feed by setting up Meadow Mozambique Limitada, in partnership with the mayor of Namaacha, Jorge Tinga. (macauhub)
