Germany funds Ocean Science Centre Mindelo in Cape Verde

6 December 2012

Germany has provided Cape Verde with funding of 3 million euros to fund construction of the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo, work on which is due to begin in the first half of 2013, Cape Verdean weekly newspaper A Semana reported.

The newspaper cited the president of the National Institute for Fishing Development (INDP) as saying that funding for construction of the building was entirely provided by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, via Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung (Geomar).

Óscar Melício also said that the architectural plans and details for the centre were being drawn up and would be finished in the first quarter of next year.

The president if the INDP said that in future the centre would house several laboratories, offices and scientific equipment, and would also have technical workshops to provide logistical support for cruise ships that travel to West Africa.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung, the main research partner of the INDP with which it jointly operates the Ocean Science Centre, since 2005 has carried out a number of scientific projects in the area of ocean studies, based in Cape Verde. (macauhub)
