Mozambican government to grant more precious stone prospecting concessions

2 January 2013

The Mozambican government plans to offer concession on three areas for prospecting for precious stones in the district of Nacala-a-Velha in Nampula province, northern Mozambique, Mozambican news agency AIM reported.

The public tender launched recently, the deadline of which ends on 30 January, is only open to proposals from Mozambican citizens, either individually or collectively.

According to the Ministry for Mining Resources, the proposals for prospecting precious stones in Nacala-a-Velha must include a prospecting and surveying programme, as well as a detailed budget for the first year of business.

Nampula province is notable for its precious stones, such as tourmaline and aquamarine, which has led to problems with artisanal miners setting themselves up in areas that have already been offered as private concessions. (macauhub)
