Electronic payments in Cape Verde rise by 30 pct over holiday period

The number of payments made with electronic cards in Cape Verde from 1 to 25 December rose by 30 percent compared to the same period of 2011, electronic payment system company Sociedade Interbancária e Sistemas de Pagamentos (SISP) said in Praia.

According to the figures, in that period transactions totalled 1.5 billion Cape Verdean Escudos (13.7 million euros) in payments made with the Vinti4 card, and the total amount at automatic teller machines (ATMs) exceeded 2.417 billion escudos (22 million euros).

In the first 25 days of the month cash withdrawals increased by between 4 and 5 percent in the Vinti4 network compared with the same period of 2011.

After the Christmas holidays, from 26 to 31 December, Cape Verdeans’ withdrawals from Vinti4 ATMs totalled over 578 million escudos (5.24 million euros) and electronic payments with cards totalled 318 million escudos (2.9 million euros).

Cape Verde has over 187,000 Vinti4 cardholders that use a network of 159 ATMs and 2873 payment terminals at a variety of businesses. (macauhub)
