The number of taxpayers registered in Mozambique rose five-fold between 2006 and 2012, according to statistics from the Mozambican Tributary Authority (AT), cited by Mozambican newspaper AIM.
The same figures showed that just over 2 million citizens had a Unique Tax Identification Number (NUIT), whilst in 2006 the number of registered taxpayers was 500,000.
The chairman of the AT, Rosário Fernandes, said that in 2012 a record number of new NUITs had been generated, or 484,000, most of which for individuals.
However, Fernandes said that despite the growing number of taxpayers, the situation was still far from what would be desirable given that the country has an estimated active population of 10 million people. (macauhub)
