Production of heavy sands concentrate by Irish company Kenmare Resources at the Moma heavy sands project, in Mozambique, reached 189,900 tons in the first quarter, which was a quarterly rise of 20.9 percent, the company said in a statement.
Kenmare Resources said that this led to production of 137,500 tons of ilmenite, a quarterly rise of 11.2 percent and 10,400 tons of zircon, or 2.9 percent less than in the three months ended in December 2012.
In the period, the company exported 48,500 tons of ilmenite, which was relatively low because of small amounts of the product in warehouses and weak international demand.
The Irish company also said that although demand for the raw materials it produces remained weak, an increase in demand was expected in the next few months.
Kenmare Resources has been involved in exploring heavy sands deposits in Moma, Nampula province since 2007. (macauhub)
