The first factory of Portuguese group Salvador Caetano in China, a partnership with a local company to manufacture buses for airports, is due to be inaugurated in July, said the unit’s managing director, Mário Conde.
Located in Dalian, a port city in the northeast of China, halfway between Beijing and the Korean peninsula, the new factory will employ around 300 staff until 2014, Conde said, according to Portuguese news agency Lusa.
The new factory involves investment of 4 million euros, half of which will be provided by the Portuguese group and the remainder by its partner, Brilliance Special Vehicles, of HuaChen Group Auto Holding Co, with headquarters in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province.
“We are going to start manufacturing buses for airport services and in a second phase will move on to electric urban vehicles,” Conde said, noting that production would initially be focused on the Chinese market.
The Dalian factory, built on a 3.2 hectare plot, will be the group’s first project in Asia and “an excellent opportunity for growth of our industrial business,” Conde said.
The Portuguese group, with headquarters in Vila Nova de Gaia, northern Portugal, also operates in Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Cape Verde and Angola. (macauhub)
