Finland’s Wärtsilä to operate power plant in Mozambique

30 April 2013

Finnish company Wärtsilä signed a three-year contract to operate and maintain the Ressano Garcia Thermal Power Plant, the company said in a statement published on its website Monday.

Owned by Sasol New Energy of South Africa, a subsidiary of the Sasol group and Mozambican state power company Electricidade de Moçambique (EdM), the Ressano Garcia Power plant operates with 18 turbines built by Wärtsilä and powered by natural gas from the Pande and Temane gas fields, in Inhambane province.

According to Wärtsilä, this is Mozambique’s largest natural gas fired power plant and the second-largest in the whole of Africa.

Construction of the power plant is due to be finished in May 2014 and the electricity it produces will be sold to EdM. (macauhub)
