8 May 2013

Movitel, the third mobile phone operator in Mozambique, currently has 2 million customers as compared to 400,000 last year, the company’s chief executive said Tuesday in Maputo.

During a ceremony to celebrate its 1st anniversary, Ramos Sengo noted that, as well as investment rising from US$117 million in 2012 to US$300 million this year, the company’s fibre optic network had increased from 12,600 kilometres in 2012 and this year is expected to reach a total of 20,000 kilometres.

As well as this Movitel is present in all of the 128 districts in Mozambique, as compared to 78 districts when the company started operating in 2012, according to Mozambican news agency AIM.

Movitel, which is a consortium made up of Vietnamese telecom company Viettel (70 percent) and Mozambique’s SPI (30 percent) was, in 2010, awarded the international tender launched by the Mozambican government for a third mobile phone operator, beating Portugal Telecom and Angola’s Unitel. (macauhub)
