Guinea-Bissau’s international partners reiterate support for country and elections

9 July 2013

Guinea-Bissau’s main international partners reiterated on Monday their commitment to helping the country and to holding elections there, said the director of the African Union’s Peace and Security Office.

El Ghassim Wane heads a delegation of five international organisations that on Monday began a joint visit to Guinea-Bissau, the second since the 12 April 2012 coup d´état. He said that holding elections would allow legitimate authorities to make “the far-reaching changes which Guinea-Bissau needs.”

The mission includes representatives from the African Union, the United Nations, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and the European Union. As in the first mission last December, the aim is to evaluate the national situation and associated support options. (macauhub)
