Angolan government to build cotton ginning and spinning mill in Malanje province

18 July 2013

The Angolan Ministry of Industry plans to build a cotton ginning and spinning factory in Malanje province, the provincial director of industry, geology and mines, Luís Monteiro, said on Wednesday.

During a visit by provincial governor Norberto dos Santos to the former Uphoka Oil and Cotton Factory, Monteiro said the mill would be able to process and transform hundreds of tons of cotton per day.

The new factory will be built in Malanje municipality. The Angolan Industrial Development Institute is conducting studies ahead of the start of construction work.

Cotton cultivation was introduced in Malanje province in 1947, when the Companhia Geral de Algodão de Angola (Cotonang), a Portuguese/Belgian consortium established in 1926, obtained a concession to produce cotton in an 80,000 square km area in eastern and western Malanje. (macauhub)
