13 August 2013

Angola’s Geology and Mining Minister, Francisco Queiroz said in Luanda that the government planned to increase diamond production by up to 5 percent per year, Angolan news agency Angop reported.

Queiroz said that the government planned to achieve this growth based on stipulations of the “Angola 2025” National Development Plan.

The minister said that the strategic guidelines for meeting this target included involving Angola’s diamond business in all stages of the world’s diamond industry in order to make Angola one of the top three producers in the world.

As part of the “Angola 2025” guidelines the government plans to organise artisanal mining in line with current legislation and n the mid-term replace it with semi-industrial production and to drive the emergence of a national jewellery industry, using both precious and semi-precious stones and precious and other metals.
