Construction of a distribution market to absorb farm production in Maputo province is set to begin in early 2014 in Matola municipality on the outskirts of the Mozambican capital, the provincial governor has announced.
Maria Elias Jonas said the funds needed for the project were already in place, adding that the market will be able to serve producers and distributors from the province’s eight districts.
Jonas announced the distribution market’s construction during the ceremony marking the start of the 2013/2014 agricultural season but did not reveal the amounts involved, reports the Maputo-based daily Notícias.
When it begins operations the new Matola market will be the second distribution market built in Maputo province. The first is in the Zimpeto neighbourhood of the city of Maputo.
The governor explained that the project was conceived to provide farmers with an efficient outlet for their increasing production, thereby helping alleviate remnant hunger clusters.
The previous agricultural season recorded production of 6.5 million tons of various products, more than the initial forecast of 5.9 million tons, Jonas said. (macauhub)
