Mozambique to auction new coal concessions in June 2014

27 November 2013

The Mozambican government plans to hold an auction for coal concession in the provinces of Tete and Niassa in June 2014, the national director for Mines said on the sidelines of a conference on energy resources.

Eduardo Alexandre announced the new auction, but declined to say which blocks would be available to interested parties.

The national director of Mines for the Mining Resources Ministry also said that no blocks for natural gas prospecting would be put up for auction until parliament approved the new mining law.

“I don’t know on what date parliament will discuss the proposed law but what I can add is that it is expected to happen in the first quarter of 2014,” said Eduardo Alexandre.

Brazilian group Vale and Anglo-Australian group Rio Tinto are currently exploring huge coal reserves in Tete province. (macauhub)
