Mini hydro project to help increase citrus production in Ganjelas, Angola

7 January 2014

The construction of a small hydroelectric plant able to produce 2 megawatts of power in the Ganjelas irrigated zone will be completed this coming August, says the governor of Angola’s Huila province.

João Marcelino Tyupinge told Angop that the plant would enable an increase in citrus production on the 6,200 hectares managed by Sociedade de Ganjelas (Soganjelas).

Songanjelas’s orchard area is currently in experimental phase and should result in a harvest of 48,000 tons of citrus fruit, mangos and other products.

The project is located 45 km south of the city of Lubango in Chibia municipality, whose estimated population of 131,000 inhabitants is mainly dedicated to farming and raising cattle. (macauhub)
