Maputo International Fair celebrates 50th anniversary this year

11 February 2014

Celebrations for the 50th Maputo International Fair (FACIM) will make this year’s edition of the fair special, the event’s organisers said recently.

João Macaringue, the president of the Institute for Export Promotion (Ipex), said that this year’s edition “will be full of events and celebrations of the main people and occurrences over its lifetime.” The fair brings together producers, sellers, investors, importers, exporters, buyers, creators and inventors to do business and set up partnerships.

Cited by the Mozambican press the president of Ipex said that construction work on FACIM’s facilities at the new Ricatla venue were delayed due to disagreements between investors and the government.

An urban plan for the new FACIM area includes construction of a chain of luxury hotels, housing, shopping centres and offices, along with other facilities costing a total of over US$1 billion.

Macaringue added that there were many proposals, including some from Spanish, Chinese and Dubai-based companies, to build facilities, but all of them had problems with “scheduling and priorities.”

Macaringue added that starting with construction of apartment complexes and shopping centres would not solve FACIM’s current problems, as it does not yet have its own infrastructure and fairs are held in giant marquees. (macauhub)
