Block in northern Mozambique may have more gas than expected

18 February 2014

Italian oil and gas group ENI projects that the Area 4 block in the Rovuma Basin, northern Mozambique, contains more gas than discovered so far, according to a report on activities in 2013 published recently.

“The management’s estimates [are that] Area 4 may contain up to 2.65 trillion cubic metres of gas,” the report from the Italian group said. That figure is the equivalent of 93 trillion cubic feet.

Previous estimates pointed to 75 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the block.

The Italian groups previously owned 70 percent of the Area 4 block, which has since been reduced to 50 percent with the sale of a stake to the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNCP). The remaining 30 percent are shared by Portuguese group Galp Energia, with 20 percent and Mozambican state company Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, with 10 percent. (macauhub)
