The Macau government plans to do everything it can to make the territory more competitive by taking advantage of its role as a platform for economic and trade cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, the region’s Chief Executive said Saturday in Beijing.

Chui Sai On, who travelled to the Chinese capital to attend the opening of the second session of the 12th People’s National Assembly, said that Macau also planned to make more and better use of its advantages as a world centre for tourism and leisure.

During his stay in Beijing, Chui met with the secretary of the Provincial Committee of Guangdong of the Chinese Communist Party, Hu Chunhua, and the governor of the same province, Zhu Xiaodan, to discuss extending the opening hours of border control, the project for the new access route between Guangdong and Macau and the new customs model amongst other issues.

The meeting also discussed the request for free trade areas between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, which is supported by the Macau government, and future working meetings with the province are planned for the future, said Chui Sai On. (macauhub)
