Mining sector plans to become one of the biggest contributors to Angola’s GDP

23 April 2014

The mining sector wants to become one of the biggest contributors to Angola’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and one of the biggest sources of employment, the Minister for Geology and Mining, Francisco Queiroz said Tuesday in Luanda.

According to the minister, who was speaking at the opening of the days to mark mine worker’s day, these two objectives are part of the government’s strategic plan for the geology and mining sector.

Cited by Angolan news agency Angop, Queiroz added that, for that purpose, the increased contribution of the sector to GDP involved better knowledge of the country’s mining potential.

“So that we can contribute more to the national GDP, we have to know our geological potential and draw up a themed map, launch new projects and comply with the rules of the mining code,” he said.
