Cabo Verde expected to achieve 100 pct electrification in 2015

25 April 2014

Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) will achieve 100 percent electrification by 2015, the country’s Minister for Tourism, Industry and Energy said in response to questions from members of parliament, Cape Verdean weekly newspaper A Semana reported.

Minister Humberto Brito said that the focus was now on electrification of small villages and added that street lighting would also be a focus of the government’s attention.

The minister said that Cabo Verde faced serious public lighting problems, but noted that this service only started to be paid for recently, “after over 10 years without being paid for and difficulties with replacing damaged equipment.”

Brito also said that following the launch of payments for public lighting by local authorities, “if charges are higher than consumption – which rarely happens – Electra is committed to introducing improvements to the networks of municipalities that have overpaid.” (macauhub/CV)
