The Mozambican Stock Exchange reached a market capitalisation (market cap) of US$1.117 billion in 2013, which was more than double the figure for 2011, the governor of the Mozambican central bank said Thursday in Maputo.

Ernesto Gove, who was speaking at a conference in Maputo on the 15th anniversary of the Mozambican Stock Exchange (BVM), said that the rise was the equivalent of 8 percent of Mozambique’s gross domestic product (GDP), which is currently US$13.9 billion.

“In this period [2011-2013], the number of listed stocks rose from 25 to 34, the value of transactions rose by 413 percent, reaching 2.025 billion meticals (US$64.9 million) in 2013 and the number of stocks traded rose by 399 percent,” said the governor of the Bank of Mozambique cited by Portuguese news agency Lusa.
