Macau Chief Executive, Chui Sai On, and the governor of Guangdong province, Zhu Xiaodan, met Wednesday to discuss Macau-Guangdong cooperation and development projects on Hengqin Island, according to an official statement.
The Macau and Hengqin authorities are discussing the possibility of Macau leasing a new 10 square-kilometre plot of land on the island, which is already home to the University of Macau.
Chui Sai On called for cooperation with Guangdong province, which borders Macau, “is crucial for Macau’s sustainable development.”
“Our cooperation with Guangdong is long-standing and covers several sectors such as power and water supplies, as well as other products, and it is crucial for Macau’s sustainable development,” said Chui Sai On who stood alongside the governor of the Chinese province, Zhu Xiaodan.
Chui Sai On also noted that several protocols were signed at the meeting covering culture, education and tourism, as was a “Framework Agreement for creation of new areas for economic development in Cuiheng areas in the city of Zhongshan” located 30 kilometres from Macau, which will allow small and medium-sized companies to increase their presence in southern China with that municipality as their base.
