Angola produced 1.67 million tons of cereals in the 2012/2013 agricultural season, with the harvest of 1.5 million tons of maize standing out, an Agriculture Ministry official said on Friday in Menongue, Cuando Cubango province.
Despite ongoing drought in Angola it was possible to produce 38,000 tons of massango (a maize variety), 46,000 tons of massambala (sorghum) and 37,000 tons of rice, said Valdemar Morais, an advisor from the ministry’s Food Security Office, on the sidelines of a seminar on agricultural meteorology for 35 personnel from agrarian development stations.
During the same season Angola produced more than 300,000 tons of legumes, over 670,000 tons of potatoes and 199,000 tons of sweet potatoes, with the latter among crops with surplus production.
Morais anticipated a positive 2013/2014 agriculture season with respect to production quantity and quality, and urged more investment in the sector along with enhanced working conditions for agrarian development stations personnel, more spending on irrigation and better exploitation of the country’s water resources.
