Portugal is due this week to launch a campaign to promote tourism in China centred on star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo during the China International Travel Mart 2014, one of the busiest Asian tourism fairs, said the the Portuguese Secretary of State for Tourism.
Adolfo Mesquita Nunes told Portuguese news agency Lusa that like Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal will present itself as “world famous” and a country “full of amazing places,” in a message written in Mandarin and printed on posters with the player’s picture, during the fair, which takes place in Shanghai between now and Sunday.
Cristiano Ronaldo (“C Luo” in Chinese) is the most famous Portuguese name in China and when it comes to Portugal (“Putaoya”), most Chinese soon associates the country to football and in particular the captain of the Portuguese national team.
In Shanghai, Mesquita Nunes will also meet with officials from the China National Tourism Administration, at the first Sino-Portuguese Joint Commission dedicated exclusively to the sector.
The trip by Mesquita Nunes was also notable for the arrival of the first delegate of Portugal Tourism delegate in China, Inês Cunha Alves, a position that is part of the Portuguese Embassy in China, the creation of which was announced a year by Deputy Prime Minister Paulo Portas.
By Portuguese accounts, the number of Chinese who visited Portugal (55,000) in the first half increased by 69 percent over the same period of 2013. (macauhub/PT)
