22 January 2015

The number of people visiting Macau this year should increase from the 31.5 million recorded in 2014 to 33 million, the director of the Macau Government Tourism Office, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes.

Senna Fernandes met Wednesday with the Macau press to announce key figures for the sector, namely that the number of visitors in 2014 grew by 7.5 percent in annual terms.

The director of the Macau Government Tourism Office said growth in the number of visitors exceeded all expectations, “even with gaming revenue falling from the beginning of the second half,” which means that people did not only visit Macau to gamble.

In 2014, Senna Fernandes said, Macau was visited by 21 million people from mainland China, an annual increase of 14.1 percent, 42 percent of which were from neighbouring Guangdong province.

In terms of foreign visitors, whose number fell by 1.1 percent overall, South Korean’s accounted for the most tourists, with growth of 16.9 percent to 550,000. (macauhub/MO)
