Japan donates US$1.6 million to Sao Tome and Principe

Japan has granted Sao Tome and Principe a donation of US$1.6 million in food aid of 1890 tons of rice, the Japanese ambassador for the archipelago, Masao Kobayashi said Thursday.

The donation was formalised by the Japanese ambassador and the Sao Tome Minister of Economy and International Cooperation, Agostinho Fernandes who represented the government of Sao Tome and Principe.

Masao Kobayashi said at the time that the agreement the donation is based on essentially aims to ensure food security and reduce poverty in the archipelago by raising cash selling the rice.

The money raised will be invested in economic and social projects, particularly in the construction of schools, health centres and water supply.

In addition to support for the fishing industry by providing equipment and technical assistance, Japan has also helped the archipelago in the construction sector and staff training. (macauhub/ST)
