The Secretary for Administration and Justice of Macau said Wednesday that the longstanding relationship between Macau and Portugal has allowed the territory to become an economic cooperation platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Secretary Sónia Chan was speaking during the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities that took place at the official residence of the Consul General of Portugal in Macau.

Chan highlighted the “positive results” of the platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries since the creation of Forum Macau in October 2003, which has allowed the Macau ” to increase its international influence” and promote “an appropriate diversification of industries.”

“The government of the Macau Special Administrative Region will remain committed to promoting the development of projects in Portuguese-speaking countries in Macau and within China and enhance cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries, the European Union and the Latin countries,” she said.

Chan also said the Macau government “will continue to respect multiculturalism, to promote the economy and improve quality of life, creating better living and working conditions for the entire population, including Portuguese residents in Macau.”

The government official, who represented the Chief Executive at the ceremony, noted that “relations between the peoples of China and Portugal are long-standing and Macau, as a port that is open to the outside of China, has been playing a role of great importance in promoting cultural exchange between China and the West.” (macauhub/CN/MO/PT)
