Portugal wants China’s Hainan Airlines to fly to Lisbon

16 July 2015

The Portuguese government is in contact with Hainan Airlines, a private airline in China, to establish a direct air link to Lisbon, the Portuguese Economy Minister said Wednesday in Lisbon.

Minister António Pires de Lima also told members of the parliamentary commission of Economy and Public Works that in addition to China, the government is in contact with the Mexican government for similar reasons.

“Both the Mexican government and Chinese entities have shown interest in making this direct link a reality, which in the case of China would be very important from an economic point of view and for tourism,” said the minister in parliament in what was the last regimental commission before the end of the legislature.

Pires de Lima said he had written a letter on Monday to the president of Hainan Airlines, headquartered and based in Haikou on the island of Hainan, pointing out the advantages of a direct link between the two countries. (macauhub/CN/PT)
