The wind power generated in Portugal reached Tuesday, 29 December, a new high of 4,210 megawatts, exceeding national electricity consumption for the first time, according to Portuguese power grid company Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN).

The company that manages the Portuguese power grid also said the new production record was reached at 02:15, exceeding the previous record achieved in January by 80 megawatts.

According to the information provided, the wind recorded that morning, combined with low fuel consumption meant that for the first time wind production exceeded national power consumption.

Portugal has 4,953 megawatts of installed wind power, the second most important renewable energy source in the national electricity system, after hydroelectric power with 5,791 megawatts of installed capacity. (macauhub/PT)
