The assembly of the first power turbine at power station II of the Cambambe dam in the Angolan province of Kwanza Norte, is in the final stages, the director of the construction company responsible of the US$40 million project told Angolan news agency Angop.
Gustavo Belitardo said tests were scheduled for May and power production should begin in June.
From July the dam will start producing 700 megawatts of power, double the current production.
The same official said that the second plant should be completed by the end of this year.
The Cambambe hydroelectric facility, built between 1958 and 1962 on the Kwanza River, has been undergoing improvements for over two years.
Increased power production will directly benefit the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Kwanza Norte, Kwanza Sul, Malanje, Uige and Zaire. (macauhub/AO)
