The National Forum of Cotton Producers (FONPA) of Mozambique and the Cotton Association of Mozambique (AAM) agreed at a meeting held in Nampula, to present cotton prices to the government for the current year, in which the harvest is expected to reach 70,000 tons.
The two institutions have agreed that for the present marketing year the price charged will be 14.50 meticais per kilo of top quality seed cotton and 10.50 meticais for second grade seed cotton.
In 2014/2015 first grade seed cotton was traded at a price of 11.75 meticais and second grade at a similar price to the one proposed for this year.
The Mozambican Cotton Institute forecasts that cotton production will reach 200,000 tons in 2020.
In 1972/1973 cotton production reached 144,000 tons but these values have been decreasing over the years.
China and Bangladesh remain the largest importers of cotton from Mozambique. (macauhub/MZ)
