Macau’s population reached 650,900 people at the end of last August, a figure that represents an increase of 17.8% compared to the 552,500 people living in the territory in 2011, reported the region’s Statistics and Census Bureau.
Presenting the preliminary results of the 2016 census the Bureau said the population of Macau included 638,300 residents and a floating population of 12,600. The male population totalled 314,000 people or 48.2% of the total.
The young population from zero to 14 years, totalled 77,900 people (12.0% of total), the adult population, from 15 to 64 years was 513,600 people (78.9%) and the elderly population aged over 65, was 59,400 people (9.1%).
By place of birth there were 284,100 people (43.6%) from mainland China, compared to 265,100 born in Macau (40.7%), compared with 255,200 and 226,100, respectively, in 2011.
The population density of 21,400 people per square kilometre, rose 15.9% compared to 2011 (18,478).
The publication of the overall results of the 2016 census is scheduled for April 2017. (macauhub)
