Macau can play an important role in economic and financial terms as part of the “One Belt, One Road,” initiative the special administrative region’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lionel Leong Vai Tac said in Beijing.
Cited by newspaper Ponto Final, the secretary also said that with the establishment of the Working Committee for the Construction of “One Belt, One Road,” the contribution of Macau within the economic corridor of the Silk Road and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road would be better defined.
Leong said that mechanisms such as the International Forum on Investment and Infrastructure Construction will give Macau a central role when it comes to raising finance, with an eye on some structures planned within the scope of “One Belt, One Road.”
The secretary said that the contribution of Macau could include organising meetings or thematic exhibitions, but also – and above all – establishing the financial viability of infrastructure construction projects and management of equipment consignment processes.
Lionel Leong said he was convinced that Macau can play the bridging role needed between the financial sector – which enables projects by granting loans – and the construction sector that ensures the infrastructure concerned goes ahead. (macauhub)
